In this series, the mutagen works much like in the Mirage Studios Comic Books, where it causes explicit growth, both physically and intellectually. This allowed Splinter to be depicted as a mutated rat. (Unlike the original series, Tartarughe Ninja alla riscossa (1987), where Splinter was a man who transformed into a anthropomorphic rat.)
