Two story arcs from the 5th season involve Moosylvania, a proposed 51st state. Jay Ward had purchased an island in Lake of the Woods, Minnesota (up against the Canadian border), to which he gave this name. In 1962, Ward and his publicist Howard Brandy traveled on a gimmick-laden tour bus to Washington, DC, to petition President John F. Kennedy for Moosylvanian statehood. They arrived at the White House to find it locked down with heavier security than usual. They were told that a national emergency had just occurred that day, and that all normal government business was suspended. This particular emergency came to be known in history as the Cuban Missile Crisis.
