The film intentionally depicts Dorothy's transportation back to Oz as mysterious and inexplicable. Dorothy falls asleep in a raging river in Kansas, then wakes up in a small pond in a desert. It seems to be the Deadly Desert which surrounds Oz in the novels, the natural feature which cuts off Oz from the rest of the world. Dorothy has no idea how she traveled there in her sleep.
