In an early interview, director Shane Black said that this film "picks up where the visits from the predators are often enough that [...] the military and scientific committee has actually put together a group whose job it is to monitor and keep track of this sort of phenomenon, [...] and is waiting for that next incursion, so that we can be prepared and jump on it, as opposed to being surprised". He also said that the film takes places in 2018, and is actually an interquel, set in between Predator 2 (1990) and Predators (2010). This would mean that Predators take place after 2018, despite hints in that movie to the contrary.
