When Spud is shown begging on the streets, the text of his sign reads "Help keep a wee hoose cat oot the concrete jungle". This is a reference to the novels, in which Spud (in Scots dialect) refers to people in narration as 'cats', with Spud himself being a "house cat", while Begbie is a "jungle cat". In this film Spud also addresses Veronika as "kitten".
