Director Paul Feig encouraged improvisation among leading actors, as well as having them incorporate some of their real-life personality into their characters. A couple of the included improvs include the ladies responding to trolls and hate comments on their first ghost video on YouTube (a reference to online response to the film itself) and Abby (Melissa McCarthy) liking the film Il duro del Road House (1989), which in real life is one of McCarthy's favorite films. In a deleted scene, Jillian mentions that she and Erin are dating, a reference to both Kate McKinnon being a lesbian, and possibly a hat-tip to fans who wanted to see the two characters in a romantic relationship.
