John Lithgow was hired last minute to play Sam Burns, who Emma has an affair with about halfway through the movie. According to the DVD commentary on the movie the original actor was fired. Nobody seems to know for sure who that original actor was, but media speculation has linked it to either George Dzundza or Jeff Bridges.
