In July 1789, Marie Antoinette tried using mercenary Swiss troops against would-be revolutionaries. In response to this, riots erupted in Paris. The Storming of the Bastille (14 July) by civilian insurgents and French Guards mutineers was part of these riots. The Bastille was a prison reserved for political prisoners, and was seen as a symbol of royal abuse of power. At the time of the Storming, there were only 7 inmates in the prison,.
