The film is based on the life of explorer and colonial administrator Carl Peters (1856 - 1918). He was instrumental in the creation of the new colony of German East Africa (1885-1918), and was later appointed Reichskommissar (Imperial High Commissioner) in part of the colony. His overly brutal behavior towards the native population caused a revolt. In 1897, Peters was dishonorably deprived of his commission for misuse of official power. He went into self-exile to avoid further criminal prosecution, but was allowed to return to Germany in 1914.
