According to the Blu-ray audio commentary, J.J. Abrams had a meeting with George Lucas. During the meeting, Abrams asked how he could make the film better, to which Lucas replied that he should add lightsabers. Abrams understandably did not, but he later directed Star Wars - Il risveglio della Forza (2015), which had plenty of appropriate lightsaber action.
