Art Passarella, who played the umpire in the Yankee Stadium scene, was an actual Major League umpire during the 1940s and early 1950s. He umpired three World Series and two All Star games. He turned actor in the late 1950s, but found roles mostly as (what else) an umpire. Of the 14 films and TV series in which he appeared as an actor he played an umpire eight times, including in the film version of Damn Yankees (1958). He was also one of the umpires used in the TV series Home Run Derby (1959).
