In the book, Professor Binns explains the origins of the Chamber of Secrets, not Professor McGonagall. In the books, Cuthbert Binns is professor of History of Magic, with the particularity that he makes a potentially exciting subject very boring and is the only Hogwarts teacher to be a ghost. Binns was deemed unnecessary for the films, so his few plot-relevant actions were transferred to other characters.
