The Cachtice and Orava castles were used as locations for Orlok's castle. Cachtice, which appears in the last shot of the movie, was notably the residence and later prison of the Hungarian countess Elizabeth Báthory - famously accused of torturing and killing hundreds of girls and women between 1590 and 1610, and supposedly used their blood as an attempt to retain youth. It has been speculated (such as by author Raymond T. McNally) that Báthory was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's character of Dracula.
