There are recreations of two famous photographs in this film. The first is reference to the "alternative" angle of the infamous Tank Man from the Tiananmen Square Massacre, which can be seen during the protest scenes early in the film. The second is a reference to the execution of Nguyen Van Lem, one of the most famous photos that emerged from the Vietnam War, which can be seen during the schoolyard interrogation scene.
