Although "The Tale of the Phantom Cab" appears to be the first episode of the series, "The Tale of the Twisted Claw" was actually filmed first and used as a pilot for the series. It premiered as a stand-alone on Halloween Night and was a huge hit. When the show was picked up to series, the Midnight Society was recast and their segments were reshot. Creator D.J. MacHale was livid when he found out the airdate, because he felt kids would be too preoccupied with trick-or-treating to be concerned with anything on TV that night. He was convinced that the show would never be picked up to series and was pleasantly surprised to find out he was wrong.
