The series' starting point is loosely inspired by the 2010 Sterling Gates-Jamal Igle comic run which had Kara assuming the identity of Linda Lang (with a nerdy, Clark Kent-like attire), developing a sister-like relationship with Lana (Alex), and had Cat Grant as a recurring character. In the same arc, Supergirl and Cat confronted the Dollmaker, a villain revealed to be Anton Schott, the estranged son of the Toyman (Winn).
