The origin and nature of the Uruk-Hai has always remained vague in J.R.R. Tolkien's work, as he has suggested at one point that they are cross-breeds of Orcs and Men or Goblin-Men. For their depiction in the movies, however, director Peter Jackson apparently took inspiration from an early description of Tolkien's that Orcs "worm their way out of the ground like maggots". Although the movie seems to imply that they are introduced by Saruman, in the books, they were supposedly bred under Sauron's supervision centuries before the Fellowship was formed. Behind-the-scenes books indeed corroborate that Saruman replicated Sauron's methods, and that Mordor Uruk-Hais, as seen in Il Signore degli Anelli - Il ritorno del re (2003), have noticeably rougher features to set them apart from Isengard Uruk-Hais.
