When Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Nancy (Natalia Dyer) set the trap for the demogorgon, they use a yellow yo-yo imprinted with a smiley face as a trap signal. While certainly a popular (and ubiquitous) symbol in general, in the context of this 80's reference-heavy series, this is most likely a nod to its usage (as a "signal" of sorts) in the horror classic, L'ululato (1981). Randall Flagg also wore a yellow smile face pin in both the book and 1994 miniseries adaptation of The Stand
