According to Simon Kinberg, Wolverine was not the first choice for the mutant going back in time. The filmmakers initially considered sending Beast, Xavier or Magneto to the past, but decided against it since it would have required the younger actors to impersonate their older counterparts, which was deemed tonally inconsistent with the overall mood of the movie. Wolverine was chosen because of his extended lifespan and slow aging, which allowed Hugh Jackman to play both versions of the character.
