Plot similarities to X-Men 2 (2003): the previous movie begins with an assassination attempt on an unnamed President. The plot in this one revolved around preventing an assassination; first of Bolivar Trask, and subsequently of Richard Nixon. In the earlier movie, the would-be assassin was Nightcrawler. In this movie, it is Mystique, who, in the comics, is Nightcrawler's mother. Both also involve Xavier and Magneto joining forces to prevent the political fallout from the attempt.
