Cillian Murphy originally auditioned for the role of Batman and filmed a screen test wearing the full Batsuit as Bruce Wayne. The role went to Christian Bale and Cillian Murphy was cast as Scarecrow. Murphy said he didn't believe he was ever close to landing the role and thought Christian Bale "absolutely smashed it". Murphy's screen test was lately shown in The Fire Rises: The Creation and Impact of the Dark Knight Trilogy (2013), a documentary about Christopher Nolan's films.
