Picard rose to his rank of Captain when his Commanding Officer aboard the U.S.S. Stargazer was killed in battle. A model of the Stargazer can be seen displayed by the back wall in Picard's ready room. The ship was shown in Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Battle (1987).
