When the Grandfather stands up and puts his jacket on after finishing reading the book to his grandson, he absentmindedly fumbles with checking his pockets for who-knows-what (he never actually finds anything). This, combined with his stopping and turning around at the door, are callbacks to Peter Falk's most famous role as the title character in Columbo.
