The canonicity of Marie's sister Alda is a subject of debate, as it has never been affirmed by the writers. She only appeared once in the first season, as Marie's estranged sister living in Canada who didn't show up to Ray and Debra's wedding with a gift and ruined it for them, which is the source of conflict throughout the episode. Alda is never mentioned again throughout the series and in flashbacks to Ray and Debra's wedding that she supposedly ruined, she's not present. Jean Stapleton was unavailable to reprise the role so the character was written out, but it is unconfirmed if she is still canon to the series.
