The film is primarily an original story and not a remake of any of the Japanese films. It does however, take inspiration from several elements found in Koji Suzuki's novels Spiral and S, which were sequels to the previous novel Ringu. Spiral was adapted into the film Rasen (1998) while S was also adapted into the film Sadako 3D (2012).
