Michael Landon rarely had casting problems and liked to cast mostly unknowns to give the show a sense of realism, although he wasn't averse to casting the odd famous name if they were fans of the show and approached him to ask if they could be in it. Such was Landon's personality he also persuaded several retired actors from films of his youth and persuaded them to play guest stars in the show.
