In the movie, there is no mention whatsoever of Lydia's mother. In an early draft of the script, her mother was named Evelyn; Evelyn and Charles were divorced and she remained in New York with Lydia's little sister but came to the house in Connecticut as a guest at the dinner party. However, no trace of either the mother or little sister characters, or their plot threads, remained in the finished movie. In the musical adaptation, it is explained that Lydia's mother, now named Emily Deetz, had died shortly before the story's events take place, and that death is presented as a major reason for Lydia's depression and her interest in the afterlife.
