Comparisons to The Little Mermaid (1989), like Ariel, Luca wants to explore land based life above the surface, and both are told not to go by their parents. Also like Ariel, Alberto collects objects from the human world, and both films have amusing moments with forks with the sea creatures not properly understanding their human use. Also coincidentally Jacob Tremblay (Luca) will also be the voice of Flounder in the the live-action version of The Little Mermaid.
