On the DVD commentary, actor Keir Dullea stated that the characters Dave Bowman and Frank Poole were selected for the Jupiter mission because of their remarkable control of their emotions. Specifically, during the scene in which H.A.L. denies Bowman reentry into Discovery after retrieving Poole, whereas the common person would get overexcited about the situation, Bowman on the other hand was only slightly aroused. His emotional control is also evident throughout his journey through the stargate. There are no panicked reactions throughout, just silent bewilderment.
