The fate of the Joker is left unrevealed in the movie and unaddressed in the following episodes of the series, but a DCAU comic named 'Shadow of the Phantasm' written by the film's co-writer Paul Dini explains that Andrea took Joker down into the sewers, beating him viscously and came close to killing him but hesitated upon realizing that Joker had become so twisted and insane he was no longer the man who murdered her father. Explosions then separate them and Joker is knocked into the water and is carried away by the current. The comic also details the fate of Arthur Reeves, ruined by his connection to the mob and his crusade against Batman and later meets his demise trying to get his revenge on Andrea.
