In the original book by J.R.R. Tolkien and in the animated movie, Smaug attacks Erebor/The Lonely Mountain at night. While the movie's opening narration by Bilbo and the song sung at his home says the same thing, it is clearly daytime in the opening prologue of this movie when Smaug attacks Erebor and the nearby town of Dale.
