Rob Zombie had nearly every main character killed off in the ending, including Michael Myers and Laurie (though she only dies in the Director's Cut), to finally ensure that another film could not be made. Despite this, Dimension Films insisted on a third film and Zombie walked away from such plans, not wanting to be involved with it. This film ultimately under performed financially and was disliked by fans and critics alike, casting doubt on a sequel. After years of no development, Dimension Films and The Weinstein Company finally surrendered the rights to Universal Pictures and Blumhouse, resulting in Halloween (2018).
