This has been described as the first "spaghetti western" (Italian-made western), but when this movie was made, there had already been about twenty-five such westerns produced in Italy. This was, however, the first to receive a major international and American release, which is why some of the cast and crew members were credited with American-sounding names: e.g. director Sergio Leone as 'Bob Robertson', actor Gian Maria Volontè as 'Johnny Wels', cinematographer Massimo Dallamano as 'Jack Dalmas', and composer Ennio Morricone as 'Dan Savio'.
