All four of the Monsterverse films deal with the theme of abandonment. Ford Brody is abandoned by his father who goes crazy in his search for answers in Godzilla (2014). Marlow is stuck on the island during WW2 but near the end reunites with his long lost son after 28 years in Kong: Skull Island (2017). Mark Russell is never around when Madison needs him and is only reunited with her at the very end during Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and he's hardly in this film as well choosing not to believe his daughter in one of the few scenes that they have together. Then there's Kong and Godzilla both who are the last of their kind. Throughout all four movies they show genuine concern for protecting humans so long as they're not under attack from them just where they go from here is uncertain with King of the Monsters underperforming at the box office compared to it's predecessors. Legendaries likely waiting on how well Godzilla versus Kong performs before greenlighting another Monsterverse entry.
