Wes Craven wrote the script and presented it in 1981 to try to sell it to a major studio, but no one wanted it. Even his friend and business partner Sean S. Cunningham, with whom he had made L'ultima casa a sinistra (1972), wasn't totally convinced if the premise would work. Craven said that "it just flew around" for three years until Robert Shaye of New Line Cinema, who was a distributor who wanted to produce movies, picked it up.
