For the animation style, Enrico Casarosa wanted to go with a more cartoonish somewhat exaggerated look that took inspiration from both Looney Toons and Hayao Miyazaki's films such as, The Castle of Cagliostro. There's a Looney Toons inspired moment when Luca's thrown off his bike after breaking suddenly and the halo of fish swimming above his head is a suitably aquatic take on the circling birdies effect often seen in cartoons.
