In an interview Dustin Hoffman described his co-star Robin Williams as a person with two sides to his personality. He jokingly said one side was "not the kind of person you would want to raise as a kid in your house, but an absolute delight to work with," and he said that Williams had a very opposite side to his personality in that he could be a very shy, insecure, vulnerable person who you would just want to give a big hug to. Hoffman said at times Williams was very nervous about his performance in this movie off camera.
