Similar to the stop-motion puppets seen in Un mondo perduto (1925), the prehistoric animals of this film were inspired by the art of Charles R. Knight. Knight was one of the most significant names in the field of plaoeart, his images have established the popular public image of dinosaurs and other extinct animals for most of the 20th century. The Tyrannosaurus in this film was based on Knight's early, incorrect depiction of T. rex from 1919, showing it with a blunt, lizard-like head and three hand claws. Knight's views on dinosaurs were often based on unscientific thinking, he would depict them with shrunken, lizard-like as opposed to birdlike thigh muscles, ignoring the muscle attachment points visible on the bones. He would also suggest they were dumb and sluggish creatures to show them as inferior to modern animals. These views were not carried over into the film, where dinosaurs are shown as active, energetic animals.
