The brothers are named Cain and Lincoln, and it's a biblical reference to Cain and Abel, as in Abraham/Abe Lincoln, 16th President of the USA, who abolished slavery and freed the slaves in 1800's America. Both themes - brother vs. brother and freeing of slaves - are big parts of the film.
