The original plot of South Park: Kenny Dies (2001) was for Kyle to be permanently killed off. It was decided by Matt Stone and Trey Parker that Stan and Kyle's personalities were too similar and that Butters be his replacement. For unknown reasons, they ultimately changed their minds and killed off Kenny.
