The film's plot is based on Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994), where Sonic and Tails must stop Dr Robotnik, who has gotten his hands on the Master Emerald and has tricked Knuckles into aiding him against them.
