This was Jerry Goldsmith's final score for a theatrical movie. He died on July 21, 2004 from stomach cancer. Since Goldsmith scored both the first (Star Trek (1979)) Star Trek movie and this one, his music effectively bookended the original series of ten movies, before it was rebooted with Star Trek (2009).
