The credits say that the film is only "inspired by 'Traumnovelle' by Arthur Schnitzler," first published in 1926. Given the temporal update, the small changes in names and settings, the film's screenplay is still remarkably close to Schnitzler's novella, therefore a 'based on' credit would have been maybe more appropriate.
