Much of the story material from this film and the second one is taken not from the original novel 'The Hobbit', but from the Appendices that were added to 'The Return of the King' novel, and 'Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth' (specifically a chapter called The Quest of Erebor). In it, Frodo asks Gandalf to explain why he arranged the quest by the Dwarves when he was sent to Middle-Earth to defeat Sauron. Gandalf's meeting with Thorin at the Prancing Pony (which occurs in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)) is related, as are the reasons Gandalf gives, including his fear that Sauron would form an alliance with Smaug so that the latter would help enforce his rule. Galadriel and Saruman are not specifically mentioned in this chapter or the book, but they are members of the White Council, as mentioned in the Appendices. Radagast is never named as a member of the Council, but as shown in the film, the books place his home at Rhosgobel close to Dol Guldur in Mirkwood.
