Guillermo Del Toro left the writing team for the show after the second season primarily due to disagreements with Carlton Cuse. They did not see eye to eye on how to proceed with the long-term development of the story, as Cuse wanted to completely drop the religious aspects of the Strigoi origin. Although Del Toro indicated that he had confidence in Cuse's ability to tell the story, he was not happy that Cuse opted to remove an integral aspect of the novels.Once del Toro departed, the show began to deviate sharply from the novels, taking on a much heavier turn toward a scientific and evolutionary origin for the strigoi and abandoning previous story elements that were building toward the backstory outline in the novels.
