The red pill which Dr. Edgemar tries to force Quaid to take, which he claims will allow to him to return to reality, anticipates the events of Matrix (1999), in which a red pill also allows the lead character to leave false world of The Matrix. The form of the real and imaginary worlds is transposed of course - the red pill here would ostensibly take Quaid back to his safe, complacent life, rejecting everything he has discovered.
