In a September 2022 New York Times interview with Jazmine Hughes, Whoopi Goldberg said that she earnestly lobbied to be cast in the role of Princess Buttercup, but she was not taken seriously. "Soon after the success of the The Color Purple, Goldberg learned of a forthcoming adaptation of The Princess Bride and wanted to audition for the title role. She was laughed away. The matter came up in a 1997 Playboy interview: 'I said: "But the book is about a princess who doesn't look like anybody else, who has a very different attitude. So why not me?" It hurt my feelings because I thought, Are you telling me that because you think I couldn't be a princess that all these other doors are going to slam too? Basically, yes. So I took the stuff that nobody seemed to have a problem with me doing.'"
