The melody that the little girl is playing in the beginning of the movie is Frédéric Chopin's Nocturne Opus 55 No. 1 in F minor. Dusan Gavrich (Marcel Iures) later plays Chopin's Nocturne Opus 20 in C Sharp minor. The latter was famously used again five years later in Il pianista (2002), also played by a man who lost his entire family during a war.
