The storage room the survivors jump into is full of boxes and barrels marked 'CD,' which stood for Civil Defense. During the Cold War, the federal Office of Civil Defense instituted the Community Fallout Shelter program. It directed specially made supplies were to be stockpiled in fallout shelters across the country. The light colored, fiberboard barrels are 'Sanitation Kits.' Each contained, a commode seat, commode chemical pack, bag liners, toilet paper, hand cleaner, plastic gloves, water spout, napkins, paper cups, can opener, and twist ties. The rectangular boxes were 'Cracker Rations.' Each box contains a pair of metal tins of biscuits, crackers, bulgar wafers, and carbohydrate supplement hard candies. A film error, Spam was never issued with any of the CD boxes. The dark green barrels are 17.5 gallon water barrels with extra plastic liners. The combination of kits was to supply a group of people a quart of water and 700 calories a day, the minimum for survival, for two weeks. There were other boxes created, but never shown on screen. This included; radiation detection kit, medical kit, and a ventilation kit.
