Galen Burke is the name of the odd ball who deliberately destroyed his own eye due to horrible visions. The name Galen suits him pretty well, at least for the Scandinavian audience - the word "galen" means "mad man" in Swedish. This references the fact that Galen intentionally blinded himself so that he never has to look at Samara and therefore survive, and the fact that he kidnapped and raped Evelyn, her biological mother.
